Initial Music Magazine Ideas

The target demographic:
The target demographic that I have chosen is teenagers between the age of 16 to 22. This is because this age range has an interest in music that matches the magazine I want to create. Also with this age range, they can have some spare time of which, some dedicate to listening to music. Normally, this is the kind of age range that will be found at rock gigs and so, I would be able to advertise gigs that interest them and then review them afterward. As well, most people in my target demographic are students, therefore, are more likely to read a smarter sounding magazine. Therefore, the magazine will be structured so it appeals to students but also, easy enough to read if they are not. The kind of bands that will be associated with this magazine will be: Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Young Guns, Enter Shikari, Muse, The Killers, Kids In Glass Houses and Lostprophets. It will also be associated with new bands such as Attack!Attack! and Straight Lines. The main reason these bands will be associated with this magazine is because of their genre. The magazine will be based around the alternative rock sound which can also appeal to other fans as it covers a wide variety of styles.

To illustrate the audience I am trying to capture, I used www.uktribes.com. according to the website, the group my magazine will be aimed at will be the "young alternatives". Also, there are groups that are very similar to these. These include "Skaters", "Scene kids" and "Metal heads". Although some of these groups seem different, most bands that they like will overlap genres.

 Magazine title:
The title I am considering for my magazine is "Atrocity". I chose this name because it fits in with the typical image of a teenager not caring about anyone but themselves. Although, this name was picked to be more of a contrast to the audience as my target demographic would rarely fit this image. Instead, the name was chosen just to emphasize that the magazine was based on teenagers and young adults.

The Magazine Style:
When it comes to pricing, I can not allow the magazine to be too expensive due to the fact that my target demographic does not always have a high income. To allow the price to be low, the magazine will have to include advertising on a few pages. Therefore, the magazine will cost £2.99. This is a reasonable price as it is affordable every week but is also enough to allow the magazine to make a profit. I have also based the price so that it'll be competitive with Kerrang and NME.

As well as being competitive with Kerrang in price, it'll also be very similar to it. It'll include news and reviews on new and old bands, and information on newly released gigs and reviews on mainstream gigs as well. It'll also contain regular interviews with musicians and also competitions. The main difference though is that it'll contain less bands with the "metal" genre, due to the genre not being as popular with our target demographic. Another way in which it'll differ from Kerrang is that it'll give new bands the same exposure as well known, mainstream bands.

Another way that my magazine will be similar to Kerrang will be in it's appearance. I have chosen to use a masthead similar to Kerrang's. Also, I will try to use the same photo type as Kerrang do, which is normally a medium/wide shot. This allows the cover to be good size so that you don't have to look to hard to see the image properly.
